He spent three decades in the fire service, trained international rescue teams, worked White House security details, and responded to Ground Zero after September 11, 2001, where he lost six friends. He later built and gave away a marine technology company to the employees who helped him grow it. The discipline he carried out of the firehouse is the one he still teaches from.

"In the fire service, when someone calls, the system has to be ready before the call ever comes," he said. "Nobody gets to improvise at two in the morning. Business runs on exactly the same principle, most owners just haven't been shown how to build the system while the house is still standing. That's the whole reason I get on planes."
